Its estimated that a 64% people of Muheza District are supplied with clean water from piped water scheme and hand pump wells. There are eighteen piped schemes which are classified into two categories according to type of technologies used to abstract that water from the source that is, gravity and pumping schemes.The schemes which operated through gravity are from ten wards namely Misalai,Amani, Kisiwani, Nkumba, Tongwe, Potwe, Misozwe, Kicheba, Kwemingoji and Magila while six are operated through artificial pumping energy that scheme are from the following wards Lusanga, Mhamba, Mtindiro, Ngomeni, Kigombe, Bwembwera and Mpapayu
Water Department objective of the plan
The primary objective of the plan is to alleviate and improve the health of the rural communities through provision of safe and adequate water supply and sanitation services. Also the increased access to water supply & sanitation services (total users / beneficiaries coverage as percentage of total rural population) will lead into:-
•Increased number of rural communities with adequate management, operation and maintenance procedures, which fully involve women in decision making roles.
•Reduced drudgery and time spent for collecting water.
•Improved water supply quality.
•Improved knowledge, attitudes and practices in relation to health, sanitation and hygiene (including increased use of latrines and habit of washing hands after going to toilet, before eating and washing babies).
•To increase water supply coverage from 64% to 90% by year 2020 through rehabilitation, extension and construction of new projects in rural area.
•To increase sanitation coverage from the currently reported figure of 77% to 95% by year 2020 through promotion of sanitation campaign
